But to me it seems like laptops are
designed right.

Why don't they put the electronic BEHIND
the display..... making the display and
system kind of an all in one..... and
make the keyboard such that it is a
keyboard only?

That way if anything spilled on keyboard
it doesn't damage the internals....and
keyboard can be replaced easily.
something that uses the Atom CPU...maybe an ultra-small notebook or a
I looked at the Intel D945GCLF:

Sorry, this is to do with a Toshiba laptop but it'll lead to the
person concerned buying a Dell so it's worth a punt in here!

A not-very-techie friend of a friend uses something called Picassa(?)
which, so I'm led to believe, is some sort of photograph software (a
google baby?). Anyway, she had "trouble" hosting her photos so she
decided to uninstall the software and re-download it.

Once the software had downloaded, her system froze. After about 10
minutes she turned it off and when she powered back on was met with
the black "windows did not shut down correctly" screen.

It seems that whichever option she selects, the system simply loops
around (screen goes black, she gets the Toshiba splash screen (F2 to
enter BIOS, F12 for boot menu) before arriving back at the "windows
did not shut down correctly" screen.

Any advice? I've told her to get her original OS CD and boot from
that and try a repair (she's running XP) but apparently there is no CD
supplied, the machine was bought at that time a couple of years ago
when all you got was a recovery partition.

Is she up the proverbial creek without a paddle?

Gigabyte X48-DS4 POST Problem: Replacement MoBo?

My Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 is still acting up. When I reboot the computer, I get the
standard 1 short beep, then the POST hangs at the memory test with "Memory T" as
the last message showing. If I leave it there, it will resume and boot in 10
minutes or so (I never sat at the screen long enough to actually time it), as
masterprometheus indicated a while back in another forum. I still cannot find
any references to the problem, and Gigabyte does not admit to it.

I've already done all the troubleshooting I can do (remove all peripherals and
replace 1 at a time, update BIOS from F1 to F2), and the problem persists.

Now Gigabyte sez to submit an RMA request, but my wife (it's her
embroidery/quilting design computer) doesn't want to go without the computer for
the 3 weeks they say it will take to troubleshoot and return it. So, I am
getting ready to buy another Mobo to replace this one. If I get a new X48-DS4
back, I'll replace an older Mobo in another machine and sell the old one (or
keep it as a backup).

Dilemma is: Buy another X48-DS4 (or, I just found there is a DS5...) or try out
a different brand? I have a P35-DS4 in my other machine, and it runs fine. I
don't know if this is going to be a recurring problem with Gigabyte, so I'm
looking for experiences & recommendations for alternatives. I will keep the
Q9450, 2x2 GB OCZ Reaper DDR2-1066, HD3850 gfx, and all other peripherals.

I realize Mobo preferences are personal, but would like some input for a Mobo
with similar price and performance.

Below is some history:

"masterprometheus" wrote...
>
>> Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4, Q9450, 2 x 2 GB OCZ Reaper.
>>
>> Was running fine until I had to reboot after some maintenance (Runs F@H SMP +
>> GPU clients). I get the standard single beep at the BIOS screen, but then it
>> hangs at
>>
>> Memory T
>>
>> Same place after several tries -- reset and power off. Even after an hour of
>> cooldown (running in a basement at ~65F).
>>
>> The obvious guess is a failure in one of the RAM sticks. Anything else that
>> might do it?
>

> This is apparently a known problem with Gigabyte boards. It looks like if
> you wait for a long time , for example 5 to 10 mins , the system will
> actually complete the boot procedure and when Windows starts everything will
> run fine. I believe this has to do more with the BIOS looking for some
> devices than a faulty hardware preventing the boot. Some theories :

OK; I'm trying that now. No luck with pulling out all cards and USB stuff,
single-stick RAM (tried both), and swapping RAM to slots 2/4 instead of 1/3...

> 1. There are devices connected like external drives , flash drives, hubs etc.
> Those are known to confuse some BIOSes.
> 2. It seems iPODs and especially charging them through USB ports can be a
> factor.
> 3. A plain BIOS problem. Updating or downgrading could eliminate the problem.
>
> Try to unplug everything that is not necessary and also try a PS/2 keyb+mouse
> combo instead of usb ones (if you're using USB mouse and keyb.)

None of these have been changed in the past couple months. It's been working
fine until now.

Unfortunately, I cannot even get into the BIOS Setup screen -- the freeze is
solid where it is.

I've just installed a duo of Terastation Pro II 1TB drives on my small
network at my workplace.

We are using both Terastations in RAID5 mode, straight out the box.

The MAIN Terastation is set to perform a backup at several points
throughout the working day and in the evenings to the BACKUP drive,
which is used exclusively as a backup point.

Our data mainly consists of MS Access Databases (we have 32 of varying
sizes) where users access them occasionally throughout the day as a
point of reference mainly... only occasionally do we actually write to
these databases.

Beyond that there are many spreadsheets and also a large number of
Microsoft OneNote notebooks.

In total our "working" data is only approximately 20GB.

Can anyone advise if the Terastations inbuilt backup will actually
back up successfully open/locked files during the working day?

Sorry if the question is off topic for Hardware.pc homebuilt.

I was searching on bearshare for some TV Shows.
Regardless of what I typed in, the #1 result I got was,
( where * is my search word)

*.sexy girl has ........................

When I say #1 response, that is based on the RANK(ing) option that
Bearshare has. I don't know how they chose RANK.

Not to be redundant, but just attempting to make myself clear,
if I did a search for OLIVER TWIST, SPY, BONES, (videos files) then
my #1 ranked response would be:

OLIVER TWIST.sexy girl has ........................
SPY.sexy girl has ........................
BONES.sexy girl has ........................

I'm sure there is a simple answer. I know people can use words or
tags to describe their file but how can they put every word I'd search
for in their file's description.

I've seen web sites that would have pages of frequently searched for
words on their site to increase the hits their sites would get.
Sometimes the words were the color of the background so they would be
invisible, but I can see how it would make the web site appear in a
search for that term. Be still, they are limited by the number of
words they put on the site. I realize that their are large word
lists, but still there is a limit.

So, does anyone know how bearshare does it?

Also, I realize that there is an option in Bearshare to reduce or stop
adult type results and I believe that there is a place I can put words
to be "Kill Filtered."

No I don't have a large grasp of BS or how it works.
I'm not looking to get flamed for my question though I know I will
invariably get those types of reposes as well as the standard " (You
question here) SUCKS!" as in "Bearshare sucks, you should be using
ACME Share, it is better."

But I can sort through the gristle for the meat.

So, if you have knowledge of this question, or even a suggestion of a
better place to post it, I'd be grateful for the info.

Thanks
cheapest Tom tom v3 UK & Europe........." It won't open. O Ex freezes
delete from a right click menu either.

Anybody else get this before I start contacting them about getting rid

My new Dell machine (Vostro 200 SL from the Ireland centre) came with
a media card reader in the 3.5" bay
which is attached via a cable and socket that I don't recognise.

I want to attach the card reader to my desk about 1.5m away from the
computer and so want a new cable (but don't want to buy a new USB card
reader) as the existing one is too short. (I don't mind cables coming
out of the case - its for a kiosk)

So can anyone help me identify this cable and connector?

The socket the cable is plugged into is the only one present on the
board. On the other side it connects to a header on the motherboard,
here are some pics of where it connects to the media card reader.

any help appreciated,
