Hello,

Every now and then I hear some electric sparkling/discharge coming from the
chasis of my Dell Precision 670 ... are there any steps or hints to
troubleshoot this by myself? how to find what kind of cable is loose or
otherwise if this is due to accumulated static charge? or shall I just
contact Dell to send me a technitian? I have no warranty coverage anymore
.... 6 years old machine. I upgraded it couple of years ago to have the dual
core MOBO and upgraded the CPUs to Paxville 2.8Ghz DC.. but I didn't upgrade
the VRM though, would this be the reason? otherwise it works ok ...

TIA,
Best regards,
But the last post there is interesting. Do you have a selected option in
and started installing the necessary drivers. I've said many times on
the net and my blog that one should always download drivers from
hardware manufacturer rather than from Dell or Microsoft.

I went to the NVidia web site and used their software to examine the
laptop and select the correct driver. Imagine my surprise when it came
No real biggie, just a surprise. Never had that happen before....

I just upgraded the CPU in a Dimension 8300 to a Pentium 3.0HT, and
swiped the heat sink from a Dimension XPS Gen 2 system. It is the same
heat sink with copper heat pipes used in the faster 3+GHz Dimension
8300s. It is also the same as used in the Precision 360, Optiplex GX270
(tower model), and newer Dimension XPS systems in the monster blue or
black case. No surprise, as the motherboards all use the 875 chipset
and they look more or less the same, and use identical mounting plates.
The only difference is that some boards have integrated ADI sound and
some do not.

The CPU I took out was rated 2.6HT, and it had an all-aluminum heat sink.
The fan-and-green-cowl for both types of heat sink is the same... Ben Myers
We need a new graphics card for a Dell 4300. The card we have (64MB
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX) apparently cannot handle the 1680x1050 resolution
of a new screen we acquired.

All we need is a card that will handle the native resolution of the
screen, fit in a 4300 (AGP 4X, 250W supply), and work under Windows
XP.

Gaming or other fancy features are not required; this machine is used
only for basic office tasks. Increased noise is undesirable.

Any suggestions for a simple reliable card?

I added a new sata drive to my Win 7 32 bit Optiplex 980.

The system drive is on Sata 0, the DVD RW is on Sata 1 and
the new drive is on Sata 2.

I enabled Sata 2 in the Bios.

The system starts up and I can see the entire new drive (with
all the data it had when in my dead XPS 600).

But the DVD drive no longer shows up in Windows Explore left side
folder bar under the Computer tab. If I click on Computer, the
drive does show up on the right side.

This is odd, before the DVD showed up.

Also after the Bios splash screen I get a RAID screen showing the
two hard drives and offering to go into system setup if I hit CNTL-1.

I expect I need to do something additional in the bios, or perhaps
have the new hard drive on sata port 1 and the dvd on port 2. Would
either of these items be liable to help? Should I disable RAID in
the BIOS? (I do not remember the other choices, I do not think anything
was as simple as no-RAID.)

As always, thanks in advance and apologies for ignorance,

The Studio XPS 9000 motherboard uses standard power connectors
so a replacement ATX power supply will work. Two problems are:

1. The screw holes on the case don't match up with standard supplies.
Three of the four holes can be lined up, however.

2. The stock PS is about .5" taller than a standard supply so
there will be a gap between the bottom of the replacement

I've been running a 600 W supply to replace the 475 W stock
supply for a couple weeks now and it seems to be working well.

Hello folks,

While setting up a brand-new Latitude E5510 with Win 7 Home Premium, I've
run into a nasty problem. I updated Windows, installed applications, and
downloaded 21 updates for this service tag from Dell Support. As best I
could, I followed their instructions for the update sequence, although the
downloaded file names didn't always give a clue as to which item they
were.

Anyway, part way through the list, a Bluetooth update failed, rolled
itself back, and closed. No big deal, I thought. After a few other
updates, I ran a different Bluetooth update on the Dell list. This one
stalled part way through, with intense disk activity but no progress. I
left it for about 20 minutes, with no change. At that point, I had to use
Task Manager to kill the process.

I then noticed some anomalies in Win Explorer -- it was not showing some
folders and files that I had just been working with. Hmm, time for a
reboot. This failed, and Windows has not loaded since. The F12 startup
repair app was unable to fix the problem with a system restore. I then
tried earlier restore points, with no luck. The identified error was
always the same:

Boot critical file: E:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\compbatt.sys is corrupt

I ran the Dell pre-boot diagnostic utility, which came up clean. I could
not run chkdsk, as it tells me that "a system repair is pending". I'm
mystified by the fact that despite the multiple backups of sys files in
Win 7, no repair or system restore was possible.

Now, this machine came with no recovery or repair instructions whatsoever,
nor could I find such at Dell Support. Although I downloaded the two
items that Dell provided as manuals, neither covers this situation. My
Dell desktop has a recovery partition, but I see no mention of that for
the E5510. Is that correct?

I did get all of the media disks that Dell supplies, including the OEM Win
7 DVD, but I don't know how to use it (the E5510 does have a DVD drive).
Could someone please point me to a site with instructions for using the
OEM DVD on a laptop that won't boot? Or perhaps just describe the general
idea? Or, is it possible to simply copy needed sys files from the DVD?
That would be best of all. I'm OK with using the command line but don't
know how to give the permissions.

Any ideas or links are welcome! I haven't called Support yet, am saving
that for the last resort.
slot).

1) Would I want to? (Is the embedded video on
the modern machine better than the 4 year old
card?)

2) If I do it, do I want to install the drivers before
or after the card? Do I need to set any jumpers on
the MB to disable the integrated video (I did not see
any mention of that on the on-line manual, but I did
not find any special section on graphics cards).

Thanks in advance,
